Doctors’ Visit – General Information
Most English-speaking doctors in Vienna don’t have walk-in office hours, so you will have to call their office to make an appointment; please see the doctors with walk-in hours below.
- Most medical offices/doctors will not let you pay with your credit card. Debit card or cash is the preferred method of payment. Many doctors only accept cash, so make sure to bring money with you (recommended amount: 150 euros).
- Make sure to keep all your receipts for doctors’ visits and doctor-prescribed medication.
- You will need to file a CISI claim form after EACH doctors’ visit so that you are reimbursed.
- For doctors with walk-in hours: these doctors are on vacation several times a year. To be absolutely certain that they are open, please call their office.
- Important: please CALL, don’t email a doctor to schedule an appointment, unless it is specifically noted below!
- When you go to the doctor, they will ask for your “E-card,” which is the Austrian insurance card. Please inform them that you don’t have this card, and that you will pay out-of-pocket or “privat” in German, since you are an international student or “internationale/r Student/Studentin” in German and therefore don’t have Austrian insurance. They will ask you for your full name, date of birth (European format), and Austrian address. If you have time, it is helpful to write down this information on a piece of paper prior to going so you can show them this information right away!
PLEASE NOTE: Some doctors’ offices won’t have the doctor’s name on the doorbell; instead they may have the word “Arzt” (doctor) or “Ordination” (medical office). If you can’t find the doctor’s name, check to see if the abovementioned words are listed and ring that doorbell.
* Costs are subject to change and depend on the type of treatment.
